FEARnet: Could you talk about how Falling Skies differs from other alien invasion stories we've seen over the years?

Mark Verheiden: I think what appealed to me when I first got involved, what's unique about it, is the show starts six months after the shock and awe that the invasion's happened. So this really is a story about the machinations of the original invasion, and how they targeted military bases and took out communications. We've had six months now to sort of process that and deal with that, and now it's about... The shock has faded, we've had to deal with our losses, and now it's about the survivors coming together and really doing two things. One is the formation of the second Mass, which is the second Massachusetts. It's basically a resistance unit comprised of people who want to be fighters and fight back, and also some civilians, who are there for protection. So it's a combination of this community coming together, and then also the people in that community trying to figure out a way to strike back, basically keep those stinking aliens off our planet. [Laughs.]

Those two things make it a little different in that we're less about the mechanics of how they did it, and more about the mechanics of the resistance movement. So movies we talked about were Saving Private Ryan or The Great Escape or movies about the French Resistance during World War II. How does a small group of totally outnumbered and outgunned people find a way to not only survive and live and hold on to the things that make them human, but also strike back against this force? So those are the things that make it a little different.
