10 of the Greatest Noir Games in Videogame History

3) Max Payne

While most of the games on this list borrow only an element or two from the film-noir tradition, Max Payne steals the whole goddamn thing. The game's graphic novel cut scenes, as well as Payne's inexplicable affection for metaphors, result in a narrative more hard-boiled than a plate of deviled eggs at the NYPD Homicide Division's annual Memorial Day picnic. But the borrowing doesn't stop there! Max Payne was also one of the first games to use a true "bullet time" mechanic, something videogames would go on to get very excited about and then overuse in lieu of coming up with original ideas. The game's actual plot involves Max unraveling the mysterious origins of a drug called "Valkyr," which, as you might have guessed, means the game is ALSO chock full of references to Norse mythology. Essentially, this videogame is just one slow, 360 degree rotating nod to several different genres, and somehow it manages to combine them all into an awesome crime thriller without looking anywhere near as stupid as the Mark Wahlberg movie adaptation.
