Op dit ogenblik is het Pixar en Dreamworks die de standaard zijn voor (CGI) animatie films, hier door zou je bijna vergeten dat er een aantal films zijn die ondanks hun cult status bijna vergeten zijn. Denk hier bij aan The Iron Gigant (1999) of Treasure Planet uit 2002 (aanrader) en het nog steeds indrukwekkende Watership Down (1978). Fire and Ice

Maverick director Ralph Bakshi made his name in the 1970s as the anti-Disney: producing striking visions of sex, street life and hallucinogenic landscapes fuelled by a singular voice. After a spirited (though ultimately compromised) stab at The Lord of the Rings, he turned his attentions to the work of fantasy artist Frank Frazetta with Fire and Ice. Set in a prehistoric world where magic and sorcery hold sway, it recounts the tale of Larn (voiced by Randy Norton), a young man battling the evil wizard who destroyed his village. It's filled with Frazetta's Conan-style images of buxom women, muscle-bound barbarians and reptilian monsters on the rampage: creating a compelling universe in ways that the live-action Conan movies couldn't. Bakshi wasn't always the best plot man, but his visual style here remains one of a kind.
