3. Shodan (System Shock)

While Portal's transdimensional physics-based mindfuckery might have made for a unique approach to the puzzle game genre, its inclusion of a psychopathic female AI is far from original. 1994's System Shock, as well as its 1999 sequel, featured an intelligence program known as S.H.O.D.AN. (Sentient Hyper-Optimized Data Access Network) who, like most A.I.'s, is bent on ruling humanity as an electronic demigod. But unlike Aperture's quirky mascot, this glitch-voiced dominatrix's insults are a lot less subtle, and mostly centered around the human player's disgusting meatsack of a body.

To put it simply, SHODAN is like GLaDOS' evil older sister who got sent away to a military school... in space. But Portal isn't the only game infected by SHODAN's malicious charm. Games like Bioshock (designed by System Shock 2's Ken Levine) as well as Deus Ex are considered "spiritual successors" to the System Shock school of gameplay. In closing, I ask you to consider this thought: How cool would a Portal game set in space be? Get on it, Valve!
